Square Foot Gardening

Square Foot Gardening is nothing new to the world. In fact, my guess is that many of my readers use SFG as their preferred gardening method. Unless you are lucky enough to have enough space on your property to allow for a large in-ground garden, SFG is the easiest way to grow some vegetables and herbs.

In the coming weeks, we will be talking about things you can grow in your garden, how to grow them, and when to grow them. Right now is a great time to start planting Fall crops if you live in Utah. If you live in Arizona, well, enjoy the heat and check back when the weather is cooler. Like, January.

You can find Mel Bartholomew's All New Square Foot Gardening at various bookstores online. It is an easy read, and you can tailor your reading to the types of vegetables that you are actually interested in growing. If you aren't a fan of brussels sprouts, I wouldn't recommend growing them just because you can.

There are specific rules to Square Foot Gardening. Not all raised beds are automatically Square Foot Gardens. You have to have the grid, and you have to have Mel's Mix. You also have to have patience. This is my third year growing a garden and I finally think I am getting the hang of it. Every year I vow I will do things a little differently, and every year I actually DO things differently and get a better harvest. Next year I have even more plans. The point is, you figure out what works in your yard and your climate and stay within those boundaries.

So far this year I have harvested strawberries, kale, lettuce, tomatoes, basil, and radishes. I have more tomatoes, onions, zucchini, squash, and green beans coming in the next few weeks. Typically in Utah the best harvest comes in August for all of the summer vegetables. It should be an exciting few weeks! When my harvest is done, I will discuss ways that you can prepare for next year.

Do you have successful gardening experiences? Perhaps you have grown fruit trees? Take pictures and send them to me and be a guest blogger!
